Surprise! Our writing this week is not creative but totally essential.
For the last two weeks we have had hard, difficult, painful, angst-ridden scenes. Let’s take a creative break to get some writing business out of the way.
For some people, knowing these elements lurk ahead slows the writing and even stops it. Others dash past and forget something essential. Still others just need a creative break (that’s me).
What am I nattering on about?
- Research on the MS format for paperback and ebook. They’re not the same documents.
- Easy ways to use our writing software
- Front & Back Matter ~ for now and in the future
- The Masterbook
We're building the Foundations to our manuscript, so nothing stops us when we finish but finishing.

Heaven. Hell. Tribulations—3 of them! No, it’s not a Bible story. It’s what we need to create next as we roughly shape our novel.
The highest high, the lowest low as well as 3 major trials for our protagonist—a defeat, a twist, a betrayal.
We’re building our novel’s Foundations with week D of Discovering Your Novel, our summer series for The Write Focus.

Summer Series on Writing Craft ::
Problem. Desire. Paradise. Hell. And a dark Abyss. What are these? Our first main scenes as we come to know the story we want to write ... and remember, we read as we write.
We're in week 3, Stage C of the Foundations of our novel. Our focus is the first scenes of the Plot 7, out of order yet so important to our minds.
- Beginning with its opening problem
- Destruction of the Dearly Desired Goal
- The glorious end that's the reward for our characters' surviving all the angst
- Stressors for the Stress Point, physical & emotional & intellectual
- The Nadir, the deepest and darkest point for our protagonist
We also have the 3 Rules for Writing, 3 Math Equations for Writers, and the skeletal notes for the work to come.
We're Discovering Our Novels all this summer.

Picked your story? Picked your protagonist? And your antagonist? Picked your tagline or theme? It's time to write more as we are Discovering Your Novel.
This week's episode focuses on the Story Sketch, the basic outline or first vision of the story you want to write ~ and will be the first reader of!
We're firming up the details for our protagonists, antagonists, settings, and backgrounds ... all while we avoid Info Dump.
Then we cast our line into the future of our story by sketching the direction for our story to go. No, not west, but through the arc of the story.

Next week, we start writing the novel. Well, we've been writing all along, but we're putting all our ideas into a roughly-shaped draft.

We've started the Summer Series on the craft of Writing. In this episode, we have a week's worth of work to build the first row of the Foundation for *Discovering Your Novel*.
It's PICK week: pick your story / pick your genre / pick your protagonist / pick your antagonist / pick your tagline (or theme).
Everything else will build on these decisions. Be sure to pick what YOU want to write, not what others have tried to convince you to write. Remember, YOU'RE in control of YOUR writing. (Yes, I shouted. How many times have people said "but they say I should" instead of "I want to write this, even if it's not what they say I should write".)
